Security Screen Doors

One of the best ways that you can protect your home and your front door is to keep people from being able to break through it. Why not make things more difficult for burglars and use a security screen door that will make it difficult for them to even reach the front door.

Many homes have screen doors that separate the people outside from the residents inside. Yet, many of these are not designed to keep people out. The screening can easily be torn off and the framing is thin and built with cheap materials that break easily. If this is the case then you need to replace it with something that is built using welded steel hinges and framing.

This type of material allows your screen door to be tough and to resist some of the harshest beatings. It also helps it to fight against corrosion from rain and other outside elements. It is also designed with fly straps along the hinge and lock to prevent intruders from forcing their way through it.

These will cost you anywhere between $200 to $500 depending on the size, style, and features that you want. Many people assume that because these are used for security purposes they do not come in a design suitable for the home that we have. When you shop around for a security screen door you will be amazed at the styles that they are available in and how they can compliment your home while at the same time protecting it.

Installing Security Screen Doors

  • Before you install the new door you need to look through to make sure that you have all of the necessary parts and tools on hand. Look through your instruction manual and identify all the parts that you need and how many you need.
  • Measure the height of the opening of the door from the top of the inside frame to the lower inside frame. This will help you to know how big the Z bar needs to be. This bar comes with the screen door – but you will need to use a hacksaw to cut it down to the appropriate size. Always cut it 3/16” smaller than the width of the frame.
  • Have someone hold the screen door inside of the opening and take a look at how it is placed and whether or not it is fitting inside properly. Once it is in the right position you can use an electric drill to secure it to the molding. Drill through the Z bar and into the hinge and molding. Open and close the door to make sure you did things right.
  • Next you will need to install the header. Place it above the screen door and use a screwdriver to secure it into the already cut holes.
  • Slide the expander piece on the bottom of the screen door. This is a barrier that will help to keep dirt and debris from creeping underneath. Once installed you need to open and close the door to make sure it is firmly in place.
